Larimer County Sheriff's Office deputies and Larimer County Department of Natural Resources rangers were called to the Sunrise Picnic Area at Horsetooth reservoir at approximately 5:54 p.m. last night on the report of a boating accident.

Upon arrival rangers and deputies discovered a 22-year-old male with severe lacerations to most of the right side of his body. He was immediately air lifted to Medical Center of the Rockies where he underwent emergency surgery. He is listed in critical condition today.

The victim, from Blue River, Colorado, was reportedly being taken to the shoreline so he could leave. As the boat was backing up to the shore to let him out, the victim jumped from the boat. The boat then backed over the victim causing the lacerations from the boat's prop. The boat was driven by a 22-year-old Fort Collins man. Alcohol is believed to have been involved.

The Larimer County Department of Natural Resources and the Larimer County Sheriff's Office is conducting a joint investigation into the accident. No charges have been filed at this time. The identity of the victim will not be released and the identity of the driver will only be released if charges are filed.

Sheriff Justin Smith reminds citizens that excessive alcohol does not mix with boating, tubing or other water activities and encourages people to wear their flotation devices and have the proper equipment for the activity they are engaged in for a safe and fun holiday.
