Steve Main, Poudre Valley EMS, presents AED to Sheriff Justin Smith
The Larimer County Sheriff's Office has been awarded an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) by Poudre Valley Hospital and University of Colorado Health as part of a special grant program from the Northeast Colorado Regional Emergency & Trauma Advisory Council (NCRETAC). Steve Main, Director of Poudre Valley Hospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS), made the presentation earlier this week.
Automatic External Defibrillators are used to apply an electric current to a heart which is beating irregularly or sporadically. It is most effective when used within a few minutes of an abnormal heartbeat occurring.
Poudre Valley EMS received three AEDs from NCRETAC. In addition to the one awarded to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, Catholic Shelters and Elderhaus also received awards.
Sheriff Justin Smith expressed his appreciation and thanks to Poudre Valley EMS during a presentation ceremony earlier this week. "We appreciate Poudre Valley EMS working so closely with us to provide this equipment. It will give us a much-needed tool in assisting citizens with a medical emergency in our mountain communities."
Steve Main, Director of Poudre Valley EMS, noted that, "They (the deputies) frequently beat us to scenes by a considerable amount of time due to their deployment throughout the County, while we respond from Fort Collins." Mr. Main felt it would be beneficial for the deputies to have the AED "due to the large area and populations they serve, especially during the summer tourist season."
In addition to providing the AED, Poudre Valley EMS will also provide training for the mountain deputy who receives the AED.
Poudre Valley EMS previously awarded the Larimer County Sheriff's Office two refurbished AEDs for use by mountain deputies.
