This is a graduate seminar in geosciences at Colorado State University. We would like to access the River Bluffs Open Space, particularly at the downstream end, in order to survey the channel and adjacent floodplain areas. We will use hydraulic modeling to evaluate the velocity and shear stress present along the current channel during different discharges, and then evaluate the effect of breaching the levees to differing degrees in order to re-connect the floodplain wetlands on river right with the main channel. In other words, we would like to survey the existing site geometry in order to use these data in a numerical model to simulate what would happen during different discharges if the levee were breached. Geology, ecology and civil engineering graduate students are in this seminar, and we would like to conduct this exercise as part of a practicum on river restoration. Individual groups of 2-5 students will be coming to the open space on different days of the week and at various times to collect the necessary data, so I put in random hours and dates for the pull-down tabs above.
