Type of Event: Research

We will leave no long-term equipment at any of the 4 sites.

1) We will sample each of 4 common mullein populations for pollinators in late-June, mid-July, and early-August. For each sampling period we will observe 3 flowering V. thapsus plants for each of eight 10-minute sampling periods between 7:00 and 8:30AM. We will also conduct a second sampling between 9:30 and 11:00AM.

2) During each sampling period described #1, we will simultaneously conduct an identical sampling of the 3 most abundant flowering native species within a 50m radius of the V. thapsus population. If a non-native plant is the most abundant flowering plant within the surrounding community, we will sample these plants for pollinators as well. All other flowering species within a 50m radius will be recorded and ranked based on their abundance.

3) For 2 of the 4 populations, we will place pollination bags over all V. thapsus inflorescences immediately after the samplings described in the previous objectives. Two days later we will return to the site and repeat our observations of pollinators for the same 3 native species that were sampled 2 days prior. To control for temporal variation, we will conduct this pollination bag treatment 2 days prior instead of after the samplings described above.
