You can no longer throw away those old computers nor televisions
Did you know computers contain hazardous materials, such as lead, zinc, nickel and cadmium? Throwing old computer equipment in the trash headed to the Landfill is no longer allowed in Colorado. So what should you do with them?
The Larimer County Recycling Center is one of many places in the area that you can drop off computers — as well as televisions, stereos, VCRs, and cell phones — for recycling. Waste Management Recycling, the operator of the Recycling Center, began recycling electronics in May 2005.
Items may be dropped off at the scalehouse (see map) Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fees are charged to help with the high costs associated with recycling electronics; 40 cents per pound; cash only. See the current fees. For more information about this program, call (970) 226-1101.
Several other businesses and organizations in northern Colorado may accept old computer equipment to be recycled. The City of Fort Collins has put together a list of these placesfor you.
Thank you for considering the environment when disposing of your old computer and other electronics!
