On June 17, 2017, at approximately 8:49 p.m., the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office received reports of an accidental shooting near Forest Roads 171 and 171D (Swamp Creek / Red Feather Lakes). The victim was taken to County Road 74E and Manhattan Road by members of her party where cell phone reception was adequate to report the incident. Red Feather Lakes Volunteer Fire Department and deputies responded and made contact with the adult female victim. She was then transported via helicopter to an area hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the upper thigh.
Deputies and investigators accompanied members of the victim’s party to their campsite where the incident occurred. Several campers in the area were contacted and investigators learned multiple people had been firing weapons throughout the day. Investigators were unable to determine the source of the stray bullet and believe this to be the result of reckless discharge of a firearm.
