Larimer County residents can drop off their Christmas trees for recycling at the Larimer County Landfill at 5887 S. Taft Hill Road, Fort Collins, free of charge beginning Friday, December 20, through January 21, 2014. The County is also hosting a drop-off site for Wellington residents at the corner of 6th Street and Grant Avenue in Wellington. Additional drop-off sites hosted by the City of Fort Collins beginning December 26 through January 20, 2014, include: Edora Park, 1420 E. Stuart Street, tennis court parking lot; Rolland Moore Park, 2201 S. Shields Street; Street Utility, 625 Ninth Street (southwest corner of Lemay Ave. and E. Vine Drive)
The trees will be recycled into mulch which will be available at the Landfill at no charge in the spring. Trees must be "cleaned up" before being dropped off—all lights, tinsel, garland, plastic wrap, tree stands, wire, rope, nails, and any other foreign materials MUST be removed from the trees before recycling. Flocked trees (those decorated with fake snow) CANNOT be recycled.
Also accepted for recycling all year round are wrapping paper, packaging paper and greeting cards. These materials may be placed in your curbside recycling bin or at recycling drop-offs located at the Landfill, at the City of Fort Collins’ drop-off at 1702 Riverside Ave., and at the City of Loveland’s drop-off at 400 N. Wilson Ave. Corrugated cardboard may be recycled at these locations, as well. Cardboard recycled curbside must be flattened and broken down to 2 ft. x 2 ft. or smaller. Foil wrapping paper and Styrofoam are NOT accepted for recycling.
Regular hours at the landfill are Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please note, however, that the Landfill, Household Hazardous Waste Facility (HHW), and Recycling Drop-Off area will close at 2:30 p.m. December 24 and December 31. The Business Office and Garbage Garage will close at Noon both days. All operations will be closed on December 25 and January 1. All Landfill facilities will be open on Friday, December 27 during their normal operating hours.
