The Larimer County Board of County Commissioners this week pledged to assist in funding the newly created “Coalition for the Poudre River Watershed” (CPRW), a non-profit organization. Funding of $70,000 was earmarked to allow a total of two years financial support. This funding commitment allows Larimer County to occupy a reserved seat on the CPRW board of directors. The CPRW has requested startup funding from several public entities that are individually and collectively dealing with the on-going impacts of the 2012 High Park fire. “This start up funding will help ensure the success of the organization and the ability to pursue additional private and public funding opportunities,” says Larimer County Fire Recovery Manager Suzanne Bassinger who sits on the new board.
The CPRW has adopted a three-to-five year work program focused on post-fire restoration and mitigation activities in the High Park Fire burn area. Larimer County has significant infrastructure at risk from post-fire flooding in and downstream of the High Park Fire burn area and the CPRW activities would reduce these impacts. Ongoing restoration and mitigation is also considered another avenue to protect Larimer County residents and the traveling public from continued post-fire flash flooding. “It is hoped the CPRW will bring a collaborative, regional approach to obtaining grant funding for continued post-fire mitigation and future pre-fire forest management, “adds Bassinger.
