R&B Master Operator II
An employee who operates a variety of heavy equipment and multi-axle trucks used in the repair, maintenance, and construction of native, gravel and paved roads as well as the associated structures, and appurtenances. May be assigned to any work activity at any location in Larimer County at the discretion of the Road and Bridge Director.
Employees in these classifications are expected to have the most experience of the Larimer County Heavy Equipment Operators. Employees in these classifications operate the primary pieces of equipment, as shown below, satisfactorily. They must also be appropriately licensed and adept in the operation of the equipment included in their secondary category.
Master Heavy Equipment Operator II
Primary: Crusher and/or Lead Blade.
Secondary: All equipment types included in lower classified positions (Master, Senior, Journey and Apprentice Heavy Equipment Operator Series).
The following statements are illustrative of the duties and responsibilities of the job. The organization retains the right to modify or change the duties and responsibilities of the job at any time.
- Receives direct supervision from Team Leaders.
- Receives indirect supervision from Functional Group Managers.
- May exercise direct and indirect supervision over other employees.
- Comply with MSHA, DOT, Colorado 811 and other applicable safety regulations and procedures.
- Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
- Ensure all work meets departmental expectations.
- Ensure compliance with project rules, procedures, applicable laws and regulations.
- Operate heavy construction equipment as assigned.
- Plow snow and participate in snow and ice control activities.
- Subject to non-restrictive call back 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year for situations including but not limited to snow plowing, wild-land fires, floods and other occurrences.

Equipment Operator Specific Essential Functions:
Required Essential Functions from Senior, Journey and Apprentice Heavy Equipment Operators Series as well as:
- Connect hose from storage tank or nurse tank to truck tank and move lever to fill pressure tank with liquid.
- Drive and operate truck equipped with tank to transport, deliver and spray petroleum liquids or emulsions thereof on road surfaces.
- Drive at constant speed in a straight line to obtain uniform distribution of liquid.
- Must use personally assigned County equipment for business purposes and commuting. (Sign and Striping Team Assignment only)
- Regulate burner to heat liquid.
- Signal worker to open discharge valve.
- Start auxiliary pump.
- Change or replace screens, belts, liners, jaw plates and other wear items as needed.
- Direct the set-up of the crusher components in the proper sequence and physical locations.
- Monitor material build-up on belts, screens, pulleys, etc. and adjust to prevent or minimize such build-up.
- Move levers to move through start-up, warm-up, operational, cool-down and shutdown modes of electricity generation.
- Must know percent of slopes and how to build them i.e. 2%, 4%, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, etc. Must be able to cut and fill fore and back slopes.
- Operate the crusher from remote located push button controls to maintain the maximum flow of aggregate without over-loading or the plugging/blinding of any components.
- Start components of crushing spread in proper sequence.
- Start diesel engines and electric motors for warm up.
- Visually inspect crusher completely before starting components.
- Warm engines, motors, gearboxes, belts, etc. before placing under production load.
- Watch for and communicate with all people working in the area by voice, visually and alarm, prior to the start-up of any components as well as during the entire period of operation.
- Perform other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.

- High school diploma or equivalent. Each year of relevant progressively more responsible experience in the highway/street construction or maintenance field may be substituted for one year of the education requirement.
- High School Diploma or GED Preferred.
- Five years of heavy equipment operating experience in the road maintenance/road construction industry including asphalt roadway construction or maintenance, roadway structure construction or maintenance, road drainage structure construction or maintenance, roadside drainage systems, production of aggregate materials, hauling and placing of roadway maintenance and construction materials, and work zone practices.
- Possession of, and ability to maintain a Colorado Class "A" CDL Driver's License with air brake, "X" -Haz-Mat/tanker endorsements without "K" -intrastate only or "NTT" -no/Trctr/Trlr restriction(s).
- Possession of, and ability to maintain a DOT Medical Certificate.
- Ability to obtain a Colorado Flagger's Certification within six months of employment.
- Must be able to operate heavy equipment and a motor vehicle.
- Must be able to lift, carry, drag, or push boxes or equipment up to 135 pounds.
- Must be able to use grease gun to lube equipment, use hand tools to service crusher, remove/replace guards and rails, requires upper body forces of up to 40 lbs.
- Must be able to engage trigger on distributor and/or crack fill wand, use power tools and wire cutters requiring coupling forces up to 70 lbs.
- Must be able to stoop, bend, stretch, twist, reach, kneel, squat, and balance repetitively.
- Must be able to climb ladders to get into and out of crusher and vehicle/heavy equipment.
- Must be able to tarp loads, pull open a truck's hood and other equipment requiring 100 pounds of force.
- Must be able to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time.
- Must be able to work in a day light and night environment.
- Must be able to work in hazardous or dangerous work areas or situations.
- Must be able to work outdoors in an extreme hot, cold, dry or wet environment.
- Must be able to walk for long distances on uneven, sloped terrain in all weather conditions.
- Must be able to negotiate flights of stairs to reach upper story offices.
- Must be able to work under stressful situations including operation of equipment in bad weather or other difficult conditions (i.e. heights, limited head room).
- Must be able multi-task and make independent decisions.
- Must have acceptable vision for computer duties, performing pre/post trip inspection, driving trucks, operating heavy equipment, shovel/raking roadway materials, setting up signs/cones, installing right-of-way fencing, maintaining bridges/guardrails/culverts/roadside drainage, operating the crusher plant, weed whacking and trimming trees. Must have acceptable hearing to hear on the telephone and in public contacts.
- Must have appropriate voice skills to be clearly understood on the telephone, radio, and in public contacts.
- Must have fine and gross motor skills and full use of fingers, hands, and arms to perform computer, writing and heavy equipment operating duties.
- Must have good cognitive skills and awareness of work accuracy.
- Must possess and maintain a DOT Medical Certificate.
