Trail Technician II

Performs a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance, repair, and restoration of multi-user park trails and related facilities; assists with design and lay-out of new trail construction projects and construction of related structures.

  • Receives immediate supervision from the Trail and Project Supervisor or higher-level management or supervisory personnel.
  • Exercises direct and indirect supervision over Trail Technician I positions, temporary trail workers, and other assigned personnel.
  • Perform manual trail construction; construct, repair, and maintain multiple-use trails.
  • Construct related structures such as retaining walls, stairs, fences, and safety railings.
  • Operate equipment used in the performance of assigned tasks including all- terrain vehicles, four-wheel drive vehicles, and tractors with associated implements, chain saws, and hand and power tools.
  • Perform arduous, heavy, physical labor involved in assigned park trails construction and maintenance duties for extended periods of time; work out of doors in all weather conditions as required.
  • Anticipate unsafe circumstances; take proper safety precautions to prevent accidents.
  • Provide lead accountability for other employees within work unit, which may include scheduling, assigning and reviewing work, instructing/training in work methods, and providing input into hiring and performance evaluation processes.
  • Participate in the design and layout of new trail construction projects.
  • Inspect and evaluate the condition of existing trails; review blueprints, topographical maps, drawings, and follow instructions given regarding the maintenance and construction of trails.
  • Provide assistance for all park management functions as they relate to trail construction and maintenance.
  • Observe conditions and events occurring on park properties for misuse and anticipated or needed repairs; report observed problems to appropriate supervisory personnel.
  • Assist in developing the annual work plan for trails construction and maintenance.
  • Assign, train, direct, and supervise activities of assigned staff, ensuring adherence to established policies, procedures, and standards; assist and supervise subordinates, as necessary, resolving problems as non-routine situations arise.
  • Coordinate daily activities of and work with the trails crew including organizing daily tasks, transporting workers to and from the work site, and keeping records of daily activities.
  • Assist in interviewing, selecting, and evaluating lower-level staff as assigned.
  • Assist in organizing and administering volunteer and community service projects related to park trails construction and maintenance.
  • Assume responsibility for work site safety of self, co-workers, and the public, materials, and equipment.
  • Perform other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in park trails construction and maintenance.
  • Construction and design of natural and hard surface trails.
  • Operation of power and hand tools in park trails construction and maintenance.
  • Safe work practices and procedures.
  • Read and comprehend department and County rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standard operation procedures.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Perform duties independently without close supervision.
  • Perform CPR and respond in a medical emergency.

  • Operate and maintain a variety of trail construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Perform physically demanding labor in a variety of weather conditions in remote locations.
  • Exercise initiative and independent judgment in applying standards to a variety of work situations.
  • Exercise tact, courtesy, and firmness in frequent contact with staff and the general public.
  • Supervisory principles, procedures, and methods including selection, training, discipline, and evaluation.
  • Supervise and mentor support staff and volunteers in a productive and positive manner.
  • Plan, direct, coordinate and supervise the work of assigned staff and volunteers.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.
  • Two years of experience in a directly related field or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities.
  • Equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Park Maintenance or a related field supplemented by some specialized training in advanced trail construction and maintenance, outdoor recreation, park maintenance, or related field.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR and First Aid certifications by date of hire.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License.

Physical Requirements:

STRENGTH: HEAVY - Exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.

MOVEMENT: Frequently 2 1/2 to 5 1/2 hours/day to Constantly 5 1/2 to 8 hours/day

  • CLIMBING - Ascending or descending using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • BALANCING - Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces; or maintaining body equilibrium when performing feats of agility.
  • STOOPING - Bending body downward and forward. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • KNEELING - Bending legs at knees to come to rest on knee or knees.
  • CROUCHING - Bending body downward and for-ward by bending legs and spine.
  • CRAWLING - Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • REACHING - Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • HANDLING - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands. Fingers are involved only to the extent that they are an extension of the hand.
  • FINGERING - Picking, pinching, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • FEELING - Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture, by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
AUDITORY: Not Limited
  • TALKING - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Talking is important for those activities in which workers must impart oral information to clients or to the public, and in those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • HEARING - perceiving the nature of sounds. Used for those activities which require ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sounds, such as when making fine adjustments on running engines.
VISION: Required
  • NEAR ACUITY - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Use this factor when special and minute accuracy is demanded.
  • FAR ACUITY - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Use this factor when visual efficiency in terms of far acuity is required in day and night/dark conditions.
  • DEPTH PERCEPTION - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are.
  • ACCOMMODATION - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. Use this factor when requiring near point work at varying distances.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL SURROUNDINGS - EXPOSURE: Frequently 2 1/2 to 5 1/2 hours/day to Constantly 5 1/2 to 8 hours/day
  • EXPOSURE TO WEATHER - Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather.
  • ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS - Exposure to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation that affect the respiratory system, eyes or, the skin.
  • NOISE - Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds or a pitch or level sufficient to cause mark ed distraction or possible hearing loss.
  • VIBRATION - Exposure to a shaking object or surface. This factor is rated important when vibration causes a strain on the body or extremities.
  • Office equipment such as computer, projector, copier, fax etc.
  • Basic hand tools (e.g., hammer, shovel, screwdriver, rake)
