Supervising Environmental Hlth Spec
Reviews environmental health activities by overseeing the organization, directing, supervision, coordination, and performance of inspections and investigation duties that ensure compliance with local and state health regulations and safety codes. Enforces rules with public/private establishments and with other environmental situations and provides highly responsible and technical staff assistance. Oversees and provides education in specialized environmental health work that includes water, air quality control, food, solid and hazardous waste, child care sanitation, institutions, recreation facilities, epidemiology, zoonotic diseases, emergency response, and public nuisance issues.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Receives general supervision from Assistant Environmental Health Services Director.
- Exercises direct supervision over professional-level staff.
- Exercise direct, first-level supervision of positions, employees, operations, and activities within Environmental Health Services; may include coordinating staff training, assigning and reviewing work, participating in the interview and selection process, making recommendations impacting pay, status, and disciplinary action, evaluating performance independently or in conjunction with a higher-level supervisor/manager, and approving time off.
- Act as a resource or expert in program area, providing technical guidance to less experienced staff.
- Perform all environmental health inspections and investigation duties.
- Participate on the Division's Emergency response team which includes coordinating investigations and inspections with other emergency response representatives.
- Direct, assign, perform, and review the work of personnel engaged in a variety of inspections and investigations including those relating to water, food and drink establishments, pest, epidemiology, institutions, nuisances, recreation facilities, and other environmental problems.
- Enforce regulations through the issuance and remedial action notices, permits, and cease and desist orders.
- Review inspection and engineering reports, applicable design plans, and quality control analyses to determine compliance with environmental health regulations and safety codes.
- Assist state and federal agencies in inspecting and evaluating health hazards.
- Assist in the review, development, and implementation of departmental objectives, policies, and procedures.
- Assist with maintaining computer databases and website.
- Coordinate and conduct educational presentations for assigned personnel and public groups.
- Attend seminars, conferences, workshops, classes, lectures, etc., as appropriate, to enhance and maintain knowledge of trends and developments in field; review professional journals, attend association and professional meetings, and otherwise maintain contacts with professionals to facilitate exchange of information.
- Participate in various committees and boards related to program activities and responsibilities representing the department at hearings or legal investigations of compliance incidences as needed.
- Investigate complaints and provide technical information to the public and affected establishments or facilities.
- Prepare and maintain clear and comprehensive reports and records.
- Perform other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.
- Operation of standard office equipment that includes the use of a computer system.
- Software and business applications including, but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, databases, internet and database searches, and e-mail applications.
- Communicate and prepare reports and other documents using correct English, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
- Read and comprehend department and County rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standard operation procedures.
- Principles, practices, and objectives as related to the different programs in Environmental Health.

- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.
- Three years of experience in a directly related field or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities.
- Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Environmental Health, Biology, or a related field with a minimum of a three-hour course in Microbiology and supplemented by training in Advanced Food Safety, Child Care Sanitation, Epidemiology, And Supervisory Responsibilities.
- Certifications and training are required according to the assignment and include Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point Certification, non-community potable water supply inspection training, and any other certification and/or training needed to successfully complete the requirements of this job.
- Maintain continuing education hours annually or as required.
- Bilingual skills helpful.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License.
