Senior Court Services Specialist

Performs professional and technical human service related work in the pretrial release and evaluation programs supporting juvenile and adult offenders for Larimer County. Supervises and/or serves in a lead capacity over a small professional work unit.


The following statements are illustrative of the duties and responsibilities of the job. The organization retains the right to modify or change the duties and responsibilities of the job at any time.   

  • Receives general supervision from Court Services Manager.
  • Exercises indirect supervision over professional court services staff.
  • Provide lead accountability for other employees within work unit, which may include scheduling, assigning, and reviewing work, instructing/training in work methods, and providing input into hiring and performance evaluation processes.
  • Interview felony and misdemeanor defendants for the purpose of establishing and verifying residence, family ties, employment, and past criminal history to assist the County courts in setting appropriate bail bonds; assess risk factors.
  • Secure clients information from the Colorado Crime Information Center/National Crime Information Center, and Colorado Judicial Information System; verify whether or not the defendant has a past criminal history; gather and include all information in the report submitted to the County court system.
  • Supervise clients ordered by the court to be place under Pretrial Release supervision to ensure appearance for scheduled court hearings and compliance with all court ordered conditions of bond; report defendant's compliance or noncompliance to the Courts, District Attorney's, and Defense Council.
  • Receive referrals from the District/County courts and other criminal justice entities for clients who are court ordered to complete community service hours; interviews, screens, and places clients in appropriate nonprofit agencies to complete their community service hours.
  • Develop, monitor, and visit nonprofit referral agencies to ensure effective placement of community service clients and adherence to safety guidelines and program rules and regulations.
  • Initiate and maintain a large caseload monitoring client performance including documentation of service delivery and client activity, bond applications for court proceedings, and prepares written reports indicating the client's compliance or noncompliance with court orders; attend court hearings for the purpose of gathering and clarifying information to the District/County courts regarding the Pretrial release & Useful Public Service/Alternative Services programs; testify as necessary.
  • Provide services to program clients which may include assisting and counseling clients, assessing individual client needs, adaptation of services to suit client needs, facilitation of application procedures, following up on client services, and resolving problems.
  • Assess drug, alcohol, and mental health treatment needs via various assessment and evaluation tools; administer breathalyzer and urine testing on an as-needed basis.
  • Monitor clients while on Community Supervision; conduct random employment checks and monthly home visits/searches.
  • Provide crisis intervention.
  • Recommend the type of bond and conditions of bond to ensure court appearance and community safety.
  • Perform other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Modern office practices and procedures.
  • Principles, practices, and objectives as related to counseling and interviewing in an alternative sentencing program.
  • Record keeping and reporting procedures in a judicial system.
  • Principles, practices, and objectives as related to human behavior.
  • Supervisory principles, procedures, and methods including selection, training, discipline, and evaluation.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Read and comprehend department and County rules, regulations, policies, and standard operating procedures.
  • Provide professional customer service to clients and public.
  • Maintain sensitive and confidential information.
  • Effectively respond to conflict situations and people in conflict.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.


  • Four years of experience in a directly related field or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities.
  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Human Services, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or a related field.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, Advanced Sex Offender training.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, crisis intervention training.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, suicide prevention training.

Physical Requirements:

  • LIGHT - Exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demands are in excess of those of Sedentary work. Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

MOVEMENT - Frequently - 2 ½ to 5 ½ hours/day

  • CLIMBING - Ascending or descending using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • HANDLING - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands. Fingers are involved only to the extent that they are an extension of the hand.
  • FINGERING - Picking, pinching, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • FEELING - Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture, by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. 

AUDITORY - Not Limited

  • TALKING - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Talking is important for those activities in which workers must impart oral information to clients or to the public, and in those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • HEARING - perceiving the nature of sounds. Used for those activities which require ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sounds, such as when making fine adjustments on running engines.

VISION - Required

  • NEAR ACUITY - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Use this factor when special and minute accuracy is demanded. 
  • FAR ACUITY - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Use this factor when visual efficiency in terms of far acuity is required in day and night/dark conditions.

Work Environment: Environmental Conditions and Physical Surroundings - Exposure - Occasionally - ¼ to 2 ½ hours/day

  • EXPOSURE TO WEATHER - Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather.
  • CONFINED/RESTRICTED WORKING ENVIRONMENT - Work is performed in a closed or locked facility providing safety and security for clients, inmates, or fellow workers.


  • Office equipment such as computer, projector, copier, fax etc.

HAZARDS: Occasionally - ¼ to 2 ½ hours/day

  • Exposure to dust, fumes, gases or airborne particles
  • Exposure to blood born pathogens
