Nutrition Supervisor

Description

Performs professional, administrative, and supervisory work in developing and maintaining a public health nutrition program; coordinates and integrates nutrition services and training with other health department programs and community agencies.

Duties

  • Receives general supervision from the Community Health Services Director.
  • Exercises direct supervision over professional, technical, and paraprofessional nutrition employees.
  • Administer, supervise, and coordinate a public health nutrition program.
  • Exercise direct, first-level supervision of positions, employees, operations, and activities within the WIC/Nutrition program; may include coordinating staff training, assigning and reviewing work, participating in the interview and selection process, making recommendations impacting pay, status, and disciplinary action, evaluating performance independently or in conjunction with a higher-level supervisor/manager, and approving time off.
  • Assess and plan in-service training and continuing education activities for staff.
  • Participate and provide input to developing and managing the budget. Review and approve expenditures.
  • Evaluate program services including monitoring program caseloads for budget impact.
  • Maintain data collection systems and interpret program statistics.
  • Prepare reports for local and state health departments; participate in monitoring the nutrition program for compliance with state and federal requirements.
  • Coordinate and integrate nutrition services and training with other health department programs and community agencies.
  • Initiate and direct development and review of nutrition education materials.
  • Act as a liaison to the public, community, and other health and human services departments and agencies regarding WIC/Nutrition services, policies, and related issues.
  • Promote community awareness of program through supervising and conducting presentations to boards, agencies, and organizations.
  • Participate in various committees and boards related to program activities and responsibilities.
  • Develop and/or update program specific policies and procedures; interpret local, state, and federal policies and regulations.
  • Hold regular staff meetings to provide policy and procedure updates and to enhance employee communications.
  • Coordinate the nutritional care of program participants; oversee the appropriateness of nutrition assessment, nutrition care planning, referral, and documentation.
  • Develop collaborative relationships and referral resources with community service providers.
  • Provide direct nutrition assessment, education, referral, and counseling services to high-risk program clients as needed.
  • Recommend purchase of supplies and equipment.
  • Perform other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Principles, practices, and objectives as related to health systems management and program design and implementation.
  • Principles and practices of human nutrition in general health and disease in public health programs.
  • Scope and application of laws and regulations pertaining to public health WIC and nutrition programs.
  • Department and County rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standard operation procedures.
  • Current trends and developments in nutrition.
  • Practices and methods of program development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Community needs and resources.
  • Supervisory principles, procedures, and methods including selection, training, discipline, and evaluation.
  • Budget management and resource allocation according to governmental standards and procedures.
  • Identify program needs and coordinate and administer a nutrition care program based on those needs.
  • Analyze fiscal and program data and make effective budget recommendations.
  • Design and implement approaches to improve nutrition programs.
  • Assess client's nutritional needs, develop individual nutrition and health plans, and counsel clients in diet/nutrition practices.
  • Act as an official representative of the County in a professional manner with local, state, and national agencies and organizations.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Supervise and mentor professional and support staff in a productive and positive manner.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.
Qualifications:
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in the nutrition field, or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities, including one year of supervisory experience desirable.
  • Equivalent to a Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Nutrition, Food Science, Public Health, or a related field.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Must be a registered dietitian (RD) through Commission on Dietetic Registration and maintain registration status by completing the required American Dietetic Association CPEUs (Continuing Education units) for each applicable five-year reporting period.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills preferred.
