Maintenance Supervisor

Develops and implements building, facility, grounds, and reservoir maintenance programs for assigned parks and open lands managed by Larimer County. This includes all aspects of maintenance and repair of all buildings, facilities, grounds, campgrounds, cabins, visitor services buildings, boat docks, buoy's, and other related facilities. This also includes all aspects of tree, shrub, and lawn care, weed control, and other related landscaping needs. Supervises crews of full time and seasonal workers engaged in grounds and facilities maintenance, landscaping, and construction projects. Also supervises volunteers.

  • Receives direct supervision from the assigned manager.
  • Exercises direct and indirect supervision over parks maintenance staff, volunteers and other assigned personnel.
  • Assist assigned manager in developing, implementing, and evaluating goals, objectives, policies, procedures, priorities, and programs.
  • Inspect and supervise the maintenance of park and recreation facilities such as irrigation and pumping systems, turf areas, restroom and visitor services buildings, shelters, cabins, boat docks, buoy's, minor vehicle maintenance and repair, campgrounds, etc; coordinate maintenance activities with recreation programs; troubleshoot field problems and oversee construction projects.
  • Plan and schedule work assignments for crews; ensure equipment and supplies are available including proper safety equipment.
  • Supervise and assist assigned staff with proper techniques for planting, staking, watering, fertilizing, pruning, etc., of tress/shrubs and seeding, watering, and fertilizing of turf areas throughout all park areas.
  • Exercise direct, first-level supervision of positions, employees, operations, and activities within the assigned unit; may include coordinating staff training, assigning and reviewing work, participating in the interview and selection process, making recommendations impacting pay, status, and disciplinary action, evaluating performance independently or in conjunction with a higher-level supervisor/manager, and approving time off.
  • Operate, train, and supervise assigned staff in the operation of a variety of heavy and light equipment including mowers, boats, chainsaws, tractors, and backhoes; supervise and assist assigned staff with preventative maintenance of tools and equipment used in maintenance including mowers, weed eaters, hand tools, etc.; responsible for the security of tolls and equipment used in maintenance; perform and oversee building maintenance activities including electrical, plumbing, and mechanical.
  • Coordinate projects with other County departments, other government agencies, and the public as needed.
  • Assist in developing and managing the budget; review and approve expenditures.
  • Estimate the time, materials, and cost of projects and assist in developing project time lines; resolve related construction problems and adjust plans and specifications as needed to accommodate field conditions; assist in layout and survey of sites and calculate dimension and leveling of the architectural elements of structures and landscapes.
  • Obtain quotes and prepare formal bids in accordance with County purchasing procedures for materials and services; monitor, inspect, and approve work of private contractors; negotiate contracts with private contractors to perform needed work; maintain inventories of supplies and materials; make purchases within authority.
  • Maintain related records and reports.
  • Research and respond to complaints and requests for the public and others; document issues, and resolve issue within scope of authority.
  • Perform other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Methods, materials, techniques, tools, and the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in park and building maintenance, landscape design, water based recreation, and construction.
  • Principles, practices, and objectives as related to natural resource management in a park environmental conservation program.
  • Hazards associated with the associated work and the use of proper safety precautions.
  • Budget management and resource allocation according to governmental standards and procedures.
  • Basic principles of First Aid and CPR.
  • Read and comprehend department and County rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standard operation procedures.
  • Hazards associated with the work and proper safety precautions.
  • Supervisory principles, procedures, and methods including selection, training, discipline, and evaluation.
  • Standard bookkeeping practices and methods including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and journal entries.
  • Supervise full time and seasonal employees and volunteers.
  • Perform duties independently without close supervision.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.
  • Four years of increasingly responsible experience in parks grounds and facilities maintenance, including supervisory responsibility and general trades experience, a directly related field, or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities.
  • High School diploma or GED required supplemented by specialized training in parks management or related field.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid CDL.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certifications by date of hire.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License.
