Description

Performs janitorial work involving the care, maintenance, and cleaning of buildings and related facilities, and performs semi-skilled and skilled work involving painting, carpentry, mechanical, and electrical maintenance in the alteration, repair, and maintenance of Sheriff's Office equipment, buildings, and grounds. This is a journey level position within the Jail Maintenance Operations series. This class is distinguished from Level I by the ability to complete all expected job tasks including a range of moderate to difficult building maintenance tasks in an acceptable manner and timeframe. All positions assigned to this class require the ability to work independently without immediate supervision. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and may be filled by advancement from the Jail Maintenance Operations Worker I or, when filled from the outside, require the requisite experience and knowledge.

Duties

The following statements are illustrative of the duties and responsibilities of the job. The organization retains the right to modify or change the duties and responsibilities of the job at any time.  

  • Receives general supervision from Jail Maintenance Operations Manager and receives direction from higher-level professional or technical staff.
  • Exercises indirect supervision over inmate labor force.
  • Work in janitorial and building maintenance area in a confidential law enforcement and jail setting.
  • Sweep, mop, wax, buff, and polish floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets; empty and clean waste receptacles.
  • Clean bathrooms and related facilities; maintain supplies in restrooms.
  • Wash windows and walls.
  • Maintain proper standards of cleanliness in assigned areas.
  • Move and arrange furniture and equipment; set up rooms for special meetings or events.
  • Work in a confined, secure detention environment; work in direct contact with inmates.
  • Independently perform routine semi-skilled maintenance procedures such as replacing lighting, painting, preventive maintenance, etc. as required or as defined by a scheduled maintenance plan.
  • Under direct supervision, assist with skilled work involving plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, and electrical maintenance tasks.
  • Direct inmate labor when assisting with maintenance tasks.
  • Operate and maintain equipment used in the performance of assigned tasks; operate a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Make a variety of structural, mechanical, and general repairs.
  • Repair plumbing systems and a variety of plumbing fixtures, such as faucets, sinks, and toilets.
  • Follow safety measures applicable to any crafts or trades, as well as general Sheriff's Office or Jail safety precautions and practices; follow appropriate safety measures when handling cleaning or maintenance supplies, tools, or equipment.
  • Assist with inventory of clothing, hygiene, chemicals, and cleaning supplies; receive and pick up supplies.
  • Prepare reports or other documentation required as a part of assigned duties; complete and maintain records, logs, and reports.
  • Perform or supervise performance of various landscape and outside maintenance duties.
  • May be required to work shifts and on-call schedules.
  • Perform other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Safe operation of a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Safe work practices.
  • Sheriff's Office and County rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely verbally, in writing, and via various forms of electronic media.
  • Use office automation systems, including basic proficiency with computer applications such as e-mail, word processor, spreadsheet, and database look-up and/or entry.
  • Follow Jail and County security policies and procedures.
  • Maintain records.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of custodial and maintenance equipment; use and care for tools, supplies, and materials required in the work.
  • Perform tasks independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse population to include inmates, criminal justice agency personnel, other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.
Qualifications:
  • One year of experience in a directly related field or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities, including tasks in trade or building maintenance work, such as mechanical, electrical, carpentry, or plumbing.
  • High School diploma or GED, preferably supplemented by practical or trade schooling in trade, construction, or maintenance fields.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, Colorado Driver's License.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, first aid and CPR certificates by date of hire.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must have acceptable eyesight to perform janitorial and maintenance duties; must be able to clearly distinguish specific colors and shades and hues of colors.
  • Must have appropriate voice skills to be clearly understood on the telephone, radio, and in public contacts.
  • Must have acceptable hearing to hear well on the telephone, radio, and in public contacts.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, or walk frequently; must be able to walk up and down stairs.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, stretch, twist, reach, kneel, crawl, squat, climb, and balance.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, drag, or push, both alone and with help; must be able to lift and carry 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to push or pull up to 65 pounds; must be able to manually open or shut heavy doors while carrying tools or equipment.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, scaffolds, or stairways.
  • Must be able to climb through small openings or crawl or maneuver in small confined areas (18 inches by 18 inches).
  • Must be able to tolerate heights up to 40 feet.
  • Must be able to work in hazardous or dangerous work areas or situations.
  • Must be able to engage in physically strenuous activities to perform maintenance duties, including operating equipment and fire extinguishers or other fire equipment.
  • Must have fine and expanded motor skills; hand dexterity; use of fingers, hands, and arms; good grip strength; and good hand/eye coordination to perform maintenance duties, operate tools and equipment, etc.
  • May be subjected to caustic, flammable, or other hazardous materials.
  • Must be capable of working under stressful situations.
  • Must have cognitive skills and awareness of work accuracy.
  • Must have ability to concentrate on more than one task at a time and to make independent decisions.
