Description

To conduct investigations on a variety of matters at the direction of the District Attorney; and to provide responsible staff assistance.

Duties

The following statements are illustrative of the duties and responsibilities of the job. The organization retains the right to modify or change the duties and responsibilities of the job at any time.  

  • Receives direction from the Senior Deputy District Attorney and indirect supervision from the Senior Investigator.
  • May exercise technical or functional supervision over lower level investigator or clerical staff.
  • Perform a variety of professional investigative work relative to cases brought before the District Attorney; make arrests of felony suspects; testify in court.
  • Initiate necessary criminal actions under prescribed procedures; prepare necessary financial reports and documents which are required for County Court action.
  • Interview witnesses, suspects, and concerned individuals; obtain statements, documents, and related factual information; gather, assemble, preserve, and report facts and evidence.
  • Make recommendations to attorneys as to the sufficiency of evidence to open formal investigations.
  • Assist in the preparation of cases for court and other legal proceedings.
  • Investigate welfare fraud cases and collect pertinent evidence.
  • Perform sensitive investigations at the direction of the District Attorney regarding a variety of matters including those related to elected officials and law enforcement agencies.
  • Locate witnesses and evidence for the court; evaluate the credibility of testimony and evidence; prepare diagrams and other visual aides for courtroom presentation.
  • Coordinate investigative activities with outside agencies; assist in countywide investigations.
  • Maintain investigative and statistical records.
  • Perform other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.

  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Analyze situations and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Obtain information and evidence by observation, review of documents, and interviews.
  • Interpret and apply laws and regulations.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Use and care for firearms.
  • Demonstrate keen powers of observation and memory.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.
Qualifications:
  • Five years of increasingly complex experience in law enforcement, including investigative responsibilities
  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, police science, or a related field.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Colorado driver's license.
  • P.O.S.T Certification Preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to:
  • Operate a variety of machinery and equipment such as computers, typewriters, facsimile machines, photocopiers, two-way radios, and motor vehicles.
  • Climb, reach, and/or stretch arms, legs, or other parts of body to grasp and move objects.
  • Walk, stand, and run, and may work may involve physical confrontations.
  • Be outside or inside in all types of weather.
  • Shoot accurately with one hand with a force of 6.5 - 8 lbs depending on the type of fire arm used.
  • Tolerate wearing a utility belt weighing 15 to 20 lbs for 6 hours.
  • Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
  • Speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments, and/or directions from supervisors.
  • Read a variety of correspondence, forms, reports, etc.
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, forms, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, dictation and style.
  • Speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence.
  • Apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exist.
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
  • Record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of professional and technical languages including legal terminology.
  • Utilize mathematical formulas; add, subtract, multiply, and divid; and calculate decimals and percentages.
  • Inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.
  • Coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using automated office equipment and motor vehicles.
  • Handle a variety of items, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Differentiate between colors and shades of color.
  • Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • adapt to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
  • Talk and hear: (Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)
  • Communicate via telephone.
