Electrician Technician

Description

Maintains and repairs building electrical systems and equipment in accordance with diagrams, operating manuals, and manufacturer's specifications. Performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of County buildings and equipment.

Duties

The following statements are illustrative of the duties and responsibilities of the job. The organization retains the right to modify or change the duties and responsibilities of the job at any time.   

  • Receives general supervision from the Facility Operations Manager and the Building Services Supervisor.
  • Exercises no supervision.Perform preventive maintenance and repair to electrical systems, heating systems, plumbing systems, cooling towers, boilers, pumps, fans, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and equipment manuals.
  • Evaluate building summary reports using specific field hardware/software.
  • Operate, equip, and maintain service vehicle.
  • May direct and oversee work performed by contractors and building maintenance staff.
  • Inspect and perform complex maintenance tasks throughout the County involving mechanical and electrical tasks.
  • Analyze operational problems and initiate major maintenance of malfunctioning equipment and electrical systems.
  • May prepare bids and/or recommend option for replacing, repairing, or adding to electrical equipment or systems.
  • Inspect and ensure that all lights, fixtures, ballast and wiring, breaker boxes, and electrical switches and controls are in working order; make any necessary repairs.
  • Perform other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Lighting control systems software.
  • Electrical, mechanical, painting, carpentry, and plumbing maintenance procedures, tools, and equipment.
  • NEC guidelines and practices.
  • Building distributions systems.
  • Main distribution systems.
  • Safe work practices.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Read and comprehend department and County rules, regulations, policies, and standard operating procedures.
  • Perform advanced math skills, schematic interpretation, and formulas.
  • Perform data entry.
  • Read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedures, blueprints, engineering drawings, schematics, and MSDS information.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment controls.
  • Prepare bid specifications.
  • Perform duties independently without close supervision.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.
Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or GED required, supplemented by specialized courses in electrical, mechanical, building construction, and/or maintenance.
  • Eight years of experience in building electrical maintenance, a directly related field, or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado electrical license.

Physical Requirements:

STRENGTH: HEAVY - Exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.

MOVEMENT: Frequently 2 ½ to 5 ½ hours/day to Constantly 5 ½ to 8 hours/day

  • CLIMBING - Ascending or descending using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • BALANCING - Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces; or maintaining body equilibrium when performing feats of agility.
  • STOOPING - Bending body downward and forward. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • KNEELING - Bending legs at knees to come to rest on knee or knees.
  • CROUCHING - Bending body downward and for-ward by bending legs and spine.
  • CRAWLING - Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • REACHING - Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • HANDLING - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands. Fingers are involved only to the extent that they are an extension of the hand.
  • FINGERING - Picking, pinching, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • FEELING - Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture, by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
AUDITORY: Not Limited
  • TALKING - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Talking is important for those activities in which workers must impart oral information to clients or to the public, and in those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • HEARING - perceiving the nature of sounds. Used for those activities which require ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sounds, such as when making fine adjustments on running engines.
VISION: Required
  • NEAR ACUITY - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Use this factor when special and minute accuracy is demanded.
  • FAR ACUITY - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Use this factor when visual efficiency in terms of far acuity is required in day and night/dark conditions.
  • DEPTH PERCEPTION - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are.
  • ACCOMMODATION - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. Use this factor when requiring near point work at varying distances.
  • COLOR VISION - Ability to identify and distinguish colors.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL SURROUNDINGS - EXPOSURE: Occasionally 1/4 to 2 1/2 hours/day

  • EXPOSURE TO WEATHER - Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather.
  • EXTREME HEAT - Exposure to non weather-related hot temperatures.
  • NOISE - Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds or a pitch or level sufficient to cause mark ed distraction or possible hearing loss.
  • VIBRATION - Exposure to a shaking object or surface. This factor is rated important when vibration causes a strain on the body or extremities.
  • PLATFORM FOR MOVEMENT - Work requires walking on uneven surfaces, climbing or working on ladders, scaffolds or heavy equipment.
EQUIPMENT UTILIZED:
  • Office equipment such as computer, projector, copier, fax etc.
  • Basic hand tools (e.g., hammer, shovel, screwdriver, rake)
  • Power tools and small motorized equipment (e.g., radial saw, reciprocating saw, drill, lawn mower, weed trimmer, floor polisher)
  • Vehicles (e.g., automobile, truck, small tractor, lift, skidster)
HAZARDS: Occasionally 1/4 to 2 1/2 hours/day
  • Proximity to moving, mechanical parts.
  • Exposure to electrical shock.
  • Working in high, exposed places.
  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Exposure to dust, fumes, gases or airborne particles
