Violation Explanation

Official Report Wording, Item #02

Food containers properly labeled. (1 pt.)

PUBLIC HEALTH REASON

Foods supplied to retail food establishments must be labeled so the productís identity, origin and composition are readily known. This information is critical when food manufactures issue recalls for foods that may be implicated in a foodborne illness outbreak. Ingredient information is also needed for consumers who have allergies. Food establishments selling prepackaged foods intended for off premises consumption are required to fully label their food products. Retail food establishments must maintain a list of ingredients for foods that are made off-site but sold or served for on-site consumption. Ingredients received in bulk such as flour, sugar and salt, that have been removed from their original packaging must be labeled so they are not mistaken for similar looking ingredients or chemicals.
