The United States Census [pdf] defines a civilian veteran as 'someone 18 and older who is not currently on active duty, but who once served on active duty in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard, or who served in the Merchant Marine during World War II.' People who served for a short period of time are included in this definition.

What the above data tell us:
Between 2002 to 2011, the number of civilian veterans in the United States, Colorado, and Larimer County has steadily declined. It is estimated that in 2011 there was a greater proportion of veterans living in Colorado (10.8%) than in Larimer County (9.6%) or the United States (9.4%).What this chart shows: Percentage of Veterans in Adult Population (18+) - Larimer County Communities, 2000 Census vs. 2006-2010 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates

What the above data tell us:
The percentage of veterans living in Larimer County communities has decreased in the last half of the decade with the exception of Laporte and Estes Park. In the last half of the decade, the community with the lowest percentage of veterans in the total adult population was Timnath at 2.6% and Estes Park had the highest percentage of veterans in Larimer County with17.5% of the adult population. During this same time period (2006-2010), the average percentage of veterans in all of the Larimer County communities was 10.7% of the adult population.What this chart shows: Percentage of Veterans by Period of Service - Larimer County, 2006-2010 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates

What the above data tell us:
According to the 2006-2010 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates, the largest percentage of living veterans, 36.1%, served during the Vietnam era (1964-1975), followed by those who have served between wars (24.3%).The periods of service reported include non-war periods as well as service in times of war. The following are the dates of wartime service (from 1939 to present) indicated on this chart:
- World War II (September 1940-July 1947)
- Korean War (June 1950 - January 1955)
- Vietnam War era (August 1964 - April 1975)
- Gulf Wars (1990 to pre-9/11/2001
- Iraq and Afghanistan Wars (9/11/2001 to present)
