Third Grade Reading Scores

Date updated: 05/31/2013

The first CSAP tests were given in 1996-97 and were administered every year through 2010-11 to students in grades three through ten. The tests are subject-based, covering reading, writing, mathematics and science (all four tests are given to fifth, eighth, and tenth grade students only). Testing can be done in Spanish for third and fourth graders. All students are expected to test in English beginning in the fifth grade.

Beginning in 2011-12, students took transitional CSAP tests (TCAP) in preparation for the rollout of revised standardized tests that will be given in spring 2014.

The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) uses the terms Advanced, Proficient, Partially Proficient, and Unsatisfactory to measure achievement levels on the CSAP/TCAP tests, as defined on the CDE website. CSAP/TCAP scores for all tests and grade levels can be viewed on the Colorado Department of Education website.

What the above data tell us:

According to the U.S. Department of Education, 'research shows that children who read well in the early grades are far more successful in later years; and those who fall behind often stay behind when it comes to academic achievement.' In addition, it is often said that children learn to read through third grade and then read to learn. For this reason, the charts above represent the percentage of third graders who are proficient at reading or above by the end of third grade.

Throughout the state of Colorado, nearly three-quarters of third graders (74%) were reading at the Proficient or Advanced levels and just over 26%, or more than 16,500 third graders, were not reading at grade level. During this same time period, all three Larimer County school districts scored higher than the state average.

Park School District third graders have seen the most fluctuation in scores between 2009 and 2012, which should be viewed with caution since the student body population is small in Estes Park.
