What the above data tell us:

Although females report depression and suicide attempts at a higher rate than males, historically the rate of suicide death is higher for males. Men are much more likely than women to use firearms as a method of suicide, whereas women are more likely to choose poisoning. It is, therefore, more likely that a man using a firearm will result in death.

Nationally, the ratio of male to female suicides is almost 4 to 1 (NIMH Suicide Facts).

What the above data tell us:

The data shown above represent the rate per 100,000 residents of attempted suicide resulting in hospitalization. It is likely some of these individuals died after being admitted and would also be counted in the suicide mortality rate. No statistics are currently available representing the number of attempted suicides that did not result in hospitalization.

On average, 55% more women than men attempted suicide resulting in hospitalization in Larimer County over the last 10 years.

What the above data tell us:

The 5-year (2006-2010) average suicide mortality rate for men in Larimer County was highest for those between 25 and 34 and those over the age of 55.

During this same period, female suicides for those between the ages of 45 and 54 were more than three times higher than those for women 44 or younger.

What the above data tell us:

In Larimer County, men were more likely than women to use firearms (60% vs. 15%, respectively) as a method of suicide. The percentage of suicides by firearms was higher for those over the age of 55.

Nationally, firearms were also used more frequently by males (56%) than by females (30%) in 2007 (National Institute of Mental Health). Examples of possible 'Other' or 'Unspecified' methods include poisoning or suffocation.
