Per Capita Income

Date posted: 06/10/2010

The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) calculates per capita personal income by dividing the personal income of the residents by the population of that area as of July 1 for the reference year. Personal income is calculated as the sum of wage and salary disbursements, such as labor income, personal dividend income, and personal interest income, less personal contributions for social insurance (i.e., Social Security, Medicare).

What these data tell us:

Colorado per capital personal income consistently exceeded United States per capita income by 7.1 to 13.3 percent between 2000 and 2008. However in 2009, Colorado per capita income fell below the national per capita income for the first time in nearly a decade.

Larimer County per capita income has averaged slightly lower than United States levels. The 2001-2003 slow down in per capita personal income growth was much more pronounced for Colorado and Larimer County than for the United States. State and County growth resumed between 2004 and 2007, averaging nearly 5% annually. Between 2007 and 2008, per capita personal income growth slowed dramatically in Larimer County (0.3%); much more so than in Colorado (1.3%) or the United States (2.0%).

The national per capita income has increased the most since 2000, climbing 42%, from $30,318 in 2000 to $43,021 in 2009. In comparison, the per capita income in Colorado increased only 21.7% during the same time period.

Per capita income is derived from dividing personal income by population. Cities such as Fort Collins, that have a higher percentage of students (who earn no or limited personal income), will have a lower per capita income. (See Population by Age)
