What the above data tell us: A higher percentage of children in single-parent families were more likely to have their parent in the labor force regardless of the children's age than children in two-parent families. For example, of school-age children in two-parent families, 69% had both parents in the labor force. In comparison, 89% of school-age children in single-parent families had the custodial parent in the labor force.
While the trend for a parent to be out of the labor force when their children are young exists between both single and two-parent families, the single parent is much more likely to be in the labor force than either parent in a two-parent family. Of preschool children in single-parent families, 96% had their father in the labor force and 84% had their mother in the labor force. In comparison, 47% of preschoolers in two-parent families had both parents in the labor force.
