What these data tell us:
As people age, the rate of diabetes increases. Because the number of county residents with diabetes is relatively small, care should be taken in comparing the county's rate with that of the state. See the data table for the number of residents suffering from diabetes.The risk of type 2 diabetes increases as you get older, especially after age 45. This may be because older people tend to exercise less, lose muscle mass, gain weight, or may be due to the gradual deterioration of insulin-producing cell function.

What these data tell us:
Non-Hispanic Blacks had the highest rate of diabetes, followed by Hispanics. The 'Other' category includes American Indians/ Alaskan natives, who had the highest rate of diabetes (16.5%) in 2005 (National Diabetes Information Clearing House).The risk of type 2 diabetes also increases when a parent or sibling has the disease. In fact, researchers have confirmed that a variant in a particular gene increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (National Institutes of Health). Additionally, of those who develop gestational diabetes, 20-50% develop type 2 diabetes within 5-10 years.

What these data tell us:
In Colorado and Larimer County, more men than women have been diagnosed with diabetes and the rate has been increasing. What these data tell us:
The death rates for the United States, Colorado and Larimer County all met the Healthy People 2010 objective of less than 45 deaths per 100,000 people.
