·  Thompson School District Career Tour

·  Mark Johnston reviewed services for the upcoming summer.  Plans to serve 2200 youth in the next 7 months.

·  Have been at RMHS for drop-in dates 4-5 times now.  Having great results.  Doubled number of students at last session.

·  Have set-up meetings between PSD and TSD with Deb Callies and career counselors.

·  Kathy Dotson gave a big picture overview of the internship process. Will be using a process similar to what was used for HIRE Colorado.

·  Deb Callies gave details of the process:  1) application, 2) skills assessment 3) Portfolio development, 4) Selection, and 5) Interviews.

·  Will offer to do reviews at the ˝ way point, and at the end.  Will be voluntary.

·  Mark would like to see internships that are 20 hours per week for at least 4 weeks.

·  Mark gave an update on our 3rd Energy Corps crew.  They started training on Monday 01/24/11 and will be working for the next few weeks to complete energy assessments for low-income households.

·  Adam Crowe gave an update on the Incumbent Worker Training Program.  They are looking for more employers.  More info available at www.larimerworkforce.org/imcumbent

·  Terra Theibaut gave an update:  Date is April 27.  They need more employers.  They currently have 20, and are looking for 150 total.

·  Judy Brobst offered to escort Terra through the upcoming Career Fairs at CSU (Spring Job Fair-02/02/11, Ag & Natural Resources – 02/16/11, Technology &Engineering – 02/24/11).  Deb Callies will join them.

·  Roger Boettcher (attending for Kathy Gaasvig) gave details on the upcoming TSD Career Tour for 8th Grade At-Risk Students, April 11.  A tentative agenda was passed out.

·  Funding needed: $700 for buses, $500 for food, unknown amount for substitute teachers.  City of Loveland has contributed $700, United Way will contribute and unknown amount.

·  Looking for funding assistance as well as USB drives for each of the 100 students who participate.  Mark and Jim Neubecker will look into getting the USB drives.

·  Mark let the group know that the LCWC has applied for Summer Count$ funds for classes for 14-15 year olds over the summer.  The program will offer $25 per class incentives for attendance.

·  Mark announced the LCWC will also be offering the Youth Business Development classes taught by Nick Tart.  These classes were a big success last year with 15 youth attending.  He hopes to double that this year. Miki Roth offered to help with the Youth Business Development classes by sending a letter to the Fort Collins and Loveland Chambers asking for assistance from Chamber Members to create a panel for the end of class.  The hope is that the youth would present the business plan they developed and potentially receive seed money.

·  Cindy Cindrich let the group know that JoDawn Newlon has taken a promotional position and will not be able to continue attendance at the Youth Council Meetings.  She will continue to attend WIB meetings.  Cindy and another new staff member will work with the Youth Council.

·  Jim Neubecker asked for volunteers for the Colorado State Youth Workforce Board.  Several members expressed an interest and will contact Jim directly.

 

·  Damond Dotson of Mountain Crest announced a new facility, Corbett House, to house transitional youth.  They also offer a program called Wraparound for Youth.  Two handouts were given to members.

·  Nicole DeTurk invited the group to the LCWC GED Graduation Ceremony on 02/18/11 at 5:30 in the Fort Collins City Council Chambers, 300 LaPorte Ave.

·  Kathy Dotson updated the group on the plans for a Larimer County Career Expo.  At this point, she is looking to engage businesses to decide whether to host for 8th grade student or high school students.  She will need lots of staff and volunteers to make the event a success.  Adams County has offered to help with planning.  She will update the group further at the February meeting.
