CALL TO ORDER

Judy Jones called the meeting to order at 1:36 p.m.

CONSIDERATION OF TODAYíS AGENDA AND MINUTES OF AUGUST 9, 2012††††††

OFFICE ON AGING PARTNER PRESENTATION:† Elizabeth Garner, State Demographer

Elizabeth Garner started her presentation by stating that the state demographerís office is responsible for producing population information.†

 

The PowerPoint presentation will be included in the package mailed to the Council.†

CHAIR/EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT

Judy Jones reported that the Executive Committee finalized their goals and discussed attendance issues that will be forwarded to the commissioners for action.†

 

Judy stated that the presenter for next monthís Council meeting will be a representative from the Health District of Northern Larimer County to discuss health care.

 

Some Council members attended a conference call with Eva Jewell from Weld County to discuss the Weld County annual film festival.† The Community Education & Information Committee will take the information received and research the feasibility of duplicating the effort in Larimer County.

 

UPDATE ON OFFICE ON AGING

Ruth Long gave a staff report.† Tina Barker has had a baby boy, Mason.† Monica Becker has been covering the Ombudsman program with the help of six volunteers, but one has now resigned and two are on extended vacation.† Currently the staff is working hard on the formation of our first annual report.† It will be presented to Council next month.†

 

As Ruth reported last month, AARP has been doing some publicity on the property tax exemption.† The organization has been asking seniors that do not need the tax break to decline it.† The Jefferson County Assessorís office has stated that seniors would not be able to reject receiving the exemption in its county.† Ruth asked the Larimer County Assessorís office and it will be accepting refusals.† One person in Larimer County has already refused.† As a reminder, Ruth stated that the left-over funds will go to the Older Coloradoans Fund.†

 

Ruth updated the Council on the new project, Senior Outreach.† Katy is supervising a UNC intern that started working on the mapping of case management agencies in Larimer County.† These agencies will be put into a grid that shows the services provided.†

 

Ruth announced that she has been reappointed to serve on the Commission on Aging.† One of the functions of the Commission is to present certificates to centenarians.† If any member knows of people turning 100 years old, he/she should give the details to Ruth.† Ruth asked the Council to think about nominating a senior and leader in the community for the Commission on Aging award next year.†

 

Staff Reports:

Linda Rumney distributed a copy of the new resource guide to Council members.† Feedback is welcomed.†

 

Lynette McGowan reminded the Council that November is National Caregiver Month.† She is working with the Coloradoan to publish a feature article that will highlight working and long-distance caregivers.

 

Katy Mason reported on provider site visits.† She distributed a sign-up list and a brief overview of agencies we fund.

COMMITTEE & STAFF REPORTS

Community Education & Information Committee

Judy Jones reported that Katie Stieber and Sharon Zamora will co-chair this committee.† The Committee discussed the Coloradoan articles and the film festival.†

 

Grantee Management & Evaluation Committee

David Born reported that the Committee adopted its goals.† The Committee also discussed the site visits and the annual report.

 

Public Policy & Advocacy Committee

Helen Davis reported that the Committee is currently working on its goals.† One of its new goals is to set up an individual meeting with the commissioner liaison to give updates on what the Council is doing.† Helen stated that if there is no resolution on the overall federal budget, Colorado can lose up to one billion dollars in automatic cuts.† There was also discussion on the need for affordable housing and transportation in Larimer County.†

 

 

LIAISON REPORTS

Bridging the Gap Planning Committee

Judy Jones reported that the event will start at 10:00 a.m. on September 19.†

 

Fort Collins Senior Advisory Board Report (SAB)

Cherrie Thornton reported that the SABís Communication Committee has completed a map that will cross-reference Transfort bus stops with locations of senior apartments in Fort Collins. †

 

The SAB is advocating for additional funding for the Senior Center expansion in the City of Fort Collins annual budget.†

 

At the last SAB meeting, Joanne Johnsen from Elderhaus presented information on their new programs.† There also was a presentation about urban agriculture and land use code changes because there is great interest for senior community gardens.†

 

Loveland Senior Advisory Board (SAB)

Judy Jones announced that the SABís Harvest Bizarre will be on September 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

 

Foundation on Aging (FOA)

No report given.

 

Human Relations Commission (HRC)

Myles Crane thanked Ruth Long and the OOAAC for their support of the Elder Law Day event.†

 

He reported on the status of Make it Stop: Elder Abuse Forum.† The event is sponsored by seven boards and commissions and there are over 20 community resources attending including OOAAC.† To date, Linda Rumney, Tina Barker, Monica Becker, Helen Davis, Sharon Zamora and her husband are among the 36 people registered.

 

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Judy announced that the Council has received a resignation from Melissa Buckskin.† This leaves the Council with two openings.† She encourage the Council to recruit new members.†
