November 6, 2013
Members present: Suzanne Jarboe-Simpson Valerie Clark, Mel Hilgenberg, Harry Love, Pam Harrold, Ronda Koski, Susan Bonsall, Ruth Wilson, LaVon Blaesi, Laurel Kubin, Amanda Johnston, Ellie Betts, and Fred McClanahan, Jr.

Chairman Suzanne Jarboe-Simpson called the meeting to order at 8:05 a.m. Introductions were given. Amanda Johnston, Food Safety Education Coordinator was introduced.
Ellie Betts, Nutrition Education Supervisor gave a presentation about the SNAP-Ed and EFNEP Extension nutrition programs in Larimer County.
SNAP-Ed (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education) started in Larimer County in 2011. The current EFNEP (Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program) started in 2013. The purpose is to teach families receiving federal food assistance about nutrition, food safety, food resource management, simple cooking skills and physical activity.
Classes are taught by peer nutrition educators using research based curriculum, “Eating Smart and Being Active.” Lessons are taught once a week for 8 weeks to maximize behavior change.
Partnerships with fifteen area agencies are the key to our programs success. We look to agencies to provide room space, help recruit participants, and help us advertise.
Who we reached:
• Participants Reached: 185 individuals
• Family members impacted: 510
• Number of classes held: ~ 500
• Volunteer hours contributed: 332
• 94% of participants reported making one or more changes in nutrition practices.
• 83% of participants reported making one or more changes in their food resource management practices.
• 67% showed improvement in their food safety practices.
• 67% reported an increase in their physical activity level.
Community Feedback about SNAP-Ed and EFNEP Programs
One participant said, “After the first two lessons his family felt so much more comfortable about making decisions at home on healthy eating!” Another shared, “Your tips about saving money by planning and using a list saved me so much money. I was able to buy breakfast for my whole family for a week for under $10!”
Harry Love moved to approve the minutes of the September 4th meeting as presented. Seconded by Valerie Clark. Motion carried.

Thank you to everyone on the committee who helped at the Disaster Assistance Center in Loveland after the floods in mid-September.
A Larimer County 4-H Club in Estes Park collected candy for distribution at the Downtown Estes Park Halloween Trick or Treat
Two hundred people attended the presentation on Flood Relief for Ag Producers held at The Ranch on October 31, 2013. Future programs will be helpful to ag producers to navigate through the process to get help after being affected by flooding and other disasters.
The 2013 Farmers’ Market was very successful.
Extension Forum was held at CSU. Kathy Wolfe, 4-H Extension Agent received the Epsilon Sigma Phi Distinguished Service Award.
The new web page for Larimer County Extension is working well. Committee was reminded to also “like” our page on Facebook.
A new Americorp individual will be working with the Financial Literacy Initiative.
Trends and Issues
4-H Achievement Night was held November 2 in the McKee Building at The Ranch with approximately 350 people in attendance.
