Larimer County Cooperative Extension Advisory Meeting
March 1, 2007
The meeting was
held in the Extension Office Meeting Room in Fort Collins. Those present were Rob Knebl, Ellen Donovan, Sandra Larson, Ralph
Bender, Marsha Dooley, Pam Harrold, Mary Robertson, Suzanne Jarboe-Simpson, David
Lee, Extension Director Laurel Kubin, Extension Agents Ernie Marx and Alison
Stoven, and Fred McClanahan, Jr.
The meeting was called to order at 8:00 a.m. Introductions were made and minutes of the
previous meeting were approved.
Agriculture/Natural Resources program efforts for Extension Agent Ernie Marx
Agricultural Advisory Board
from National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden informed the board and
BCC about wind energy generation possibilities
subcommittee, in partnership with Environmental Advisory Board, to develop
User's Guide to Wind Energy Generation

meeting to discuss potential for a local carbon credit exchange program in

- Eighteen applications were received for the 4-H
agents position. The applicant pool
had thirteen people that met all qualifications and four were selected to
interview. Interviews will be March
19 and 20.
- The FSNE agent positions for Larimer and Weld
counties were advertised together.
Interviews will take place in May and positions will hopefully be
filled in June.
- Four applicants for the State Extension Director
position will interview at CSU in April.
Youth on Advisory Committee
was held regarding youth serving on the Extension Advisory Committee.
- It may be hard for some to miss school to attend
meetings but some may also be home schooled. Meeting times may need to change to accommodate
youth members’ schedules.
- Some students start late or could participate as
part of a service learning project.
- Encourage youth engagement participants and 4-H
Junior Leaders to apply along with other youth.
- Advertise through high school guidance offices,
the 4-H newsletter and ask Deni LaRue, Larimer County Community
Information Manager to send out a news release to media and other youth
Lee made a motion to increase the size of the Extension Advisory Committee with
three youth. Mary Robertson seconded the
motion. The motion was modified and
approved to state that there would be no more than 15 members on the Extension
Advisory Committee with three youth to be included.
Belt Buckles to Bowties Gala
Belt Buckles to Bowties Gala will be held on March 17 in the 1st
National Bank West Exhibition Hall at the Ranch. Silent and live auction items are needed and
Rocky Mountain Conference on Aging
Rocky Mountain Conference on Aging will be held October 24 & 25 at The Ranch. This conference will focus on:
- Aging in the workplace
- Staying in the workforce vs. retirement
- Making an impact in the workplace
boomers are directly affected by these and other aging issues. Sponsors are still needed for the conference
and may contact Laurel or Jacque Miller at the Extension Office.
- Commissioner Gibson is the liaison to the Board
of County Commissioners
- Most extension agent offices will be getting new
furniture in May
- County Fair premium book and schedules are being
- Kathy, Pam, LuAnn and Laurel have taken on
additional responsibilities until the agriculture / general 4-H agent
position is filled.
- March 24 is the 4-H Carnival in the 1st
National Bank Bldg. at The Ranch.
Trends and Issues
- Snow has been enjoyable with hope of more water
- Very nice reception for Boards and Commissions
members. The members signed a thank
you card to send to the commissioners.
- Lots of snow mold on turf
- A dramatic increase of children in Larimer County
Living in poverty. The number of
single parent families living below poverty has doubled in Fort
Collins. There was a 22% increase
over one year of children in Fort Collins that are receiving free lunches.
