State law requires the Office of the County Attorney to primarily represent the interests of the Board of County Commissioners. Upon approval by the Board of County Commissioners, the County Attorney's Office also represents the County's various administrative departments, appointed advisory boards, and other elected or appointed officials when those interests are compatible with those of the County.
State law mandates the County Attorney's Office to represent the People of the State of Colorado in certain social services/human services and mental health proceedings.
Since 1950, the County Attorney has assumed the responsibility for representing the County in all public liability and tort actions.
Attorneys appear in all courts of record and before all administrative agencies. The office handles all general civil litigation matters for Larimer County, including land use, employment issues, property tax, election issues and contracts. The office also prosecutes Dependency and Neglect actions, and zoning and building code violations. All attorneys are licensed and authorized to appear in all Colorado State Courts. Additionally, members of the office are authorized to appear before the U.S. District Court of Colorado, the U.S. 10th Circuit Court and the United States Supreme Court.
