Weather
Weather conditions can change rapidly in backcountry areas. Dress in layers, carry extra clothing, and be prepared for windy & wintery weather.
In extremely muddy conditions, these trails may be closed to protect them from damage. Such closures will be posted on this site, on open space road signs, at trailheads and a twitter update will be sent out. Otherwise, please stay on trail and do not go around muddy spots. If people go around muddy areas, the trail widens and vegetation is trampled. A widened trail is very difficult and expensive to restore. Thank you for helping to keep your open spaces beautiful!
Wildlife
Mule deer, elk, coyotes, bobcats and sometimes bears can be seen. An occasional big horn sheep has been seen passing through the open space.
Raptor/Bird Sightings
Nearly every day you will see the resident red-tailed hawks and golden eagles hunting for rodents and rabbits.
Fishing
Fishing is permitted from the bridge to the private property line to the north and the east. There is private property north and south of Eagle’s Nest Open Space. Please honor the “NO TRESPASSING” signs. Remember, a valid fishing license is required, and we recommend using only artificial lures and to practice "catch and release".
Hunting
Archery and muzzleloader hunting is allowed on weekdays at Eagle's Nest Open Space during the fall deer and elk seasons. You must possess a valid Colorado Division of Wildlife hunting license. Hunters are permitted to access the U.S. Forest Service via the Eagle's Nest trails. Hunters must have their firearms unloaded while passing through the Eagle's Nest Open Space. Rifle hunting and small game hunting is not allowed on Eagle's Nest Open Space.
Hunters must sign in and sign out at the trailhead and National Forest Access points. Regulation brochures are available trailhead.
