Will I get a W-2 for working during the 2012 elections?

If taxes were withheld from your election pay, then you will receive a W-2. W-2 forms are required to be postmarked no later than January 31, 2013.

If taxes were not withheld from your election pay, then you will not receive a W-2. However, your election pay may still be considered taxable income, and should be reported appropriately. Please consult your tax preparer regarding reporting income received from working the election.

Do I have to report my election pay if I don't get a W-2?

Yes. According to the IRS you must still report the earnings on your personal tax return. The election earnings would be listed under "Other Income" on the 1040 return.

If you worked for Larimer County in another capacity and worked on Election Day then the following applies:

  • If you are a regular benefited Larimer County Government employee, the amount of election pay is already included in your W-2 earnings.
  • If you are an hourly temporary Larimer County Government employee, you will receive a W-2 for your election pay and your regular earnings if the combined total is over $600.00 for 2012.
  • If your election pay combined with your regular earnings are under $600.00 for 2012, you will receive a W-2 for your regular earnings but not for your election pay.
